Nagpur: Bowing to the pressure from
members of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Minister of state
for Home, Kripa Shankar Singh today announced transfer of
Buldana superintendent of police for `inept' handling of
clashes between two communities in Khamgaon on December 2.
During a calling attention motion
from the Leader of Opposition, Narayan Rane (Shiv Sena) and
others, members cutting across party lines echoed their
anguish over the inept handling of situation during the
communal riots.
They alleged that all illicit
activities in Buldana, including gambling, betting and others,
have increased after the posting of Sanjay Kumar Verma, as
Superintendent Of Police, Congress members Dilip Sananda who
represents the affected constituency where the riot took
place, led the treasury benches attack on government.
A reluctant Singh earlier informed
the lower house that the government would have to examine
whether it could transfer an IPS officer, which drew huge
protest from opposition.
Deputy Speaker Pramod Shende who
was in the chair, also shared the concern of members from
either side saying, "why alaways communal riots take place in
Khamgaon only?"
Congress members demanded
withdrawal of cases against innocent who have been booked in
connection with rioting. Rane wanted to know why those
arrested from a particular community were let off by police
and if they would again be put behind the bars?
Amidst thumping of desks by both
sides, Singh announced transfer of the SP and withdrawal of
cases against the `innocent' by initiating process.
In a written statement, government
admitted that 12 police personnel and six others sustained
injuries during stone pelting. The angry mob also tried to set
ablaze police vehicles.
The riot took place after two
auto-rickshaws driven by youths from two different
communities, met with an accident near Nirmal Oil Mills. A
marriage party, which was passing through the area that time,
was affected and they also resorted to stone pelting.
Additional police force was
requisitioned from adjoining areas to control the mob. About
130 persons were arrested by police and offences under
relevant section registered against them.
Singh denied that women and
children were cane charged by police.
